What is a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)?

An HMO is a health insurance plan type of health insurance plan that usually limits coverage to care from doctors who work for or contract with the plan.

Some characteristics of an HMO are small copayments due for office visits and hospital stays. Generally, the HMO will not cover out-of-network care except for emergencies. It may require you to live and work within the service area. The HMO may also require you to select a primary care physician who will provide all your basic health services and give you a referral if you need to see a specialist.
